Tamilnadu, the second largest producer of coir in India, introduced this Industry in rural areas through Industrial Cooperatives. The first coir industrial cooperative society has been organized on 18.09.1958 in Kanyakumari District in the name of Kollengode Coir Workers Industrial Cooperative Society Ltd., Later in the year I962, the Kanyakumari Central Coir Marketing ICS came into existence. Since then, coir units under cooperatives have been organized in almost all the districts for producing coir products, thereby became the largest production network for coir industry in Tamilnadu. The industrial cooperatives have been the platfonn for showcasing the technology and strength of the coir industry both by the Coir Board as well by the State Government.
Nearly 5000 workers are engaged in coir production under this sector. The entire production process has been automized under Integrated Coir Development Project (ICDP) and various other schemes, with the assistance of State Government, Coir Board (GOI)andNCDC.
Tamilnadu State Coir Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd., widely known as TANCOFED is the apex marketing federation for all these coir industrial cooperative societies. TANCOFED is also coordinating for implementing development schemes in coir industrial cooperative societies.
